GCSE French Speaking Practice

Speaking is the part of GCSE French most students get the least practice at. With ReviseReady you answer French speaking questions aloud whenever it suits you — AQA or Edexcel, Foundation or Higher — then read back a transcript of your answer and get personalised feedback on how to make it stronger.

How French speaking practice works

Each round of practice follows the same simple loop, so you can fit a few minutes of speaking into a revision session without any setup.

  1. Step 1

    Choose your course

Pick French, then the exam board you are entered for and the tier you are working at. Everything that follows is matched to that choice.

  2. Step 2

    Answer out loud

Open a speaking task and record your response using your device microphone, just as you would answer an examiner.

  3. Step 3

    Read your transcript

Your spoken answer is turned into text, so you can see exactly what you said rather than relying on memory.

  4. Step 4

    Act on the feedback

You then receive written feedback on your answer, with clear suggestions for what to change before you try again.

Preparing for the French speaking exam

Speaking French out loud is a habit, and habits build with repetition. Students who practise regularly usually notice a difference in several places at once.

  • Feeling calmer about speaking aloud instead of freezing
  • Turning short replies into developed answers with reasons and examples
  • Reaching for a wider range of vocabulary rather than the same few words
  • Moving comfortably between past, present and future time frames
  • Spotting the mistakes you tend to repeat — and correcting them
  • Sounding clearer and more fluent as pronunciation settles

Speaking practice for AQA and Edexcel

Whichever board your school enters you for, you can practise French speaking here. Select AQA or Pearson Edexcel when you choose your course and your speaking tasks follow that board. If you want the wider picture for your board, see our AQA GCSE French revision and Edexcel GCSE French revision pages.

Foundation and Higher speaking

Choose the tier you are entered for and the speaking practice is pitched to suit it. Foundation practice keeps questions accessible so you can build confidence answering in full sentences, while Higher practice pushes you towards longer, more detailed responses with a broader range of language.

Common French speaking difficulties

Almost every student meets the same handful of obstacles when they start speaking practice. None of them are permanent.

Answers that stop too soon

Replying "Oui, j'aime le sport" answers the question but leaves a lot unsaid. Practise adding a reason (parce que…), an example and an opinion so a one-line reply becomes three or four sentences.

Hesitating mid-sentence

Pauses usually come from searching for one missing word. Learning a few fillers such as alors, en fait or ça dépend buys you a moment without breaking the flow of French.

Vocabulary disappearing under pressure

If a word will not come, describe around it: une chose pour… or c'est comme… keeps you speaking. Recording the same topic twice usually shows how much more you recall the second time.

Staying in the present tense

It is easy to talk only about now. Try answering one question three ways: hier je suis allé…, normalement je vais…, l'année prochaine je voudrais….

Pronunciation that slows you down

French silent endings, nasal sounds and the French r take repetition. Hearing your own recording back is often the fastest way to notice which sounds need work.

An unexpected question

If a question surprises you, buy time politely — c'est une bonne question — then answer the part you understood. Saying something relevant is always better than silence.

Example French speaking questions

These are original practice examples written for ReviseReady to show the kind of prompt you can answer aloud. They are not official exam questions from any exam board.

  • Parle-moi de ta famille et de la personne dont tu es le plus proche.

Tell me about your family and the person you are closest to.

  • Qu'est-ce que tu as fait le week-end dernier avec tes amis ?

What did you do last weekend with your friends? (a chance to use the past)

  • Préfères-tu habiter en ville ou à la campagne, et pourquoi ?

Would you rather live in a town or the countryside, and why? (opinion plus justification)

  • Comment est-ce que tu comptes aider l'environnement à l'avenir ?

How do you plan to help the environment in future? (a chance to use the future)

  • Décris cette photo : où sont les personnes et que font-elles ?

Describe this photo: where are the people and what are they doing?

Transcripts and personalised feedback

Seeing your answer written down changes how you review it. Once you have the transcript and the feedback in front of you, it becomes much easier to judge what you did well, where the answer could have gone further, which vocabulary or grammar points need tightening up, and what is worth practising in your next session. Because your work is saved, you can come back to the same question later and compare.
